De dag des heeren

Small-scale bed and breakfasts are dotted all over the rural Meetjesland region. Nevertheless, there is always room for one more addition, especially for a place as charming and lovely as ‘De dag des heeren’ in Merendree. Bart T’Hooft and Katleen De Decker have recently converted part of their rustic farmhouse into a guesthouse. They are proud to show us around one of the three spaces, a duplex in country house style, with a small balcony overlooking the glorious garden. “We purchased this estate in 1994, when it was still a working farm. After we had renovated the main house and converted the old pigsty into a studio, we decided to tackle the old barn. We removed the massive roof and added a thick layer of insulation.”

Today, the barn boasts a cosy bar and a large meeting space. Everything was constructed from previously used materials and decorated with antiques. That is why just about everything on display is for sale in the antique shop.

The garden used to be a meadow. Now, it is a wonderful kitchen garden divided into different ‘rooms’, with winding footpaths, rambler roses and delightful greenhouses. Behind the wisteria gallery lies a beautiful orchard. At the back of the garden, there is a romantic pond, surrounded by a stunning lawn.

The barn

Bart and Katleen always dreamed of hosting guests at the top floors of the barn, and to create both a multifunctional space and an antiques store downstairs. The barn and everything in it seem to be an ode to the reign of antiques, with old cast-iron spiral staircases, tiles from long forgotten times, rare cupboards, and classic wainscoting. “This has been a process of many years; we accumulated every item gradually over time, because we always set out to work with old and valuable materials.” The result is this truly unique location, which fits in perfectly in picturesque Merendree. “Merendree is an attractive little town, and a number of gorgeous castles can be found nearby. In its immediate surroundings, there are a few wonderful walking trails and bicycle routes, e.g. the Oude Kallevallei-tour. We also highly recommend biking along the canal. Did you know you can cycle all the way to the coast along the canal, surrounded by lush greenery?”
